Born in Kwa-Thema, Themba started dancing in high school and was later discovered by legendary musician Arthur Mafokate while performing at a soccer tournament held in Soweto in the 90s.
He went on to appear in Arthur’s hit songs, including Sika lekhekhe, which was released in 2006.
The 41-year-old is grateful that his work is finally being recognised.
“It has been a difficult journey filled with tears and turbulence. There were times where I was ready to throw in the towel but my late parents encouraged me to keep pushing harder.
“I hit rock bottom and slipped into depression when I lost my parents recently.
“Gigs were no longer coming in due to lockdown regulations and everything seemed to be working against me,” he explained.
“My big break came when I received a callback to play the role of a gangster on DiepCity. I finally saw light shining in my direction.
“I promised myself I was going to bring my A-game as soon as the camera started rolling, and I did.
“I researched the character and hung out with local gangsters to sharpen my skills,” he said.

Themba added that his hardships have taught him to be humble.
“I don’t have a car, can’t afford it right now, and the only way to get to work is through public transport. I was ridiculed for being a poor celebrity but I held my head high.
“I am happy that all the hard work has finally paid off and someone recognised my talent,” he added.
