City to attend to water issues

Athletes have been working out at the facility with no clean running water for weeks.

Athletes making use of facilities at Kwa-Thema Complex continue to struggle with a lack of running water.
Cricketer Bandile Sithole said athletes have been working out at the facility with no clean running water for weeks.
“It is demotivating because even when we bring our own water, we quickly run out.
“A lot of the younger children end up leaving the complex to ask for water from the surrounding houses,” he explained.
The complex caters to a few sports clubs as it has facilities for different sporting codes.
There is also an overflowing manhole that causes water to pool at one end of the area.

In response to African Reporter’s enquiry about the water issues, the metro stated that sports facilities were closed to the public at the start of the pandemic in 2020.
“During that period, homeless people stole various components of the water systems and other materials at the sports complex,” said metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
The municipality had to close off areas that were affected to avoid loss of water.
“The City has since opened some of the areas within the sports complex where there is a need for water.
“There are already work orders to attend to the sewer system that poses a challenge to the users and the public.
“The City will continue to monitor the situation and ensure the issue is resolved.”
