NPO to the rescue of Grade 12 learners

The foundation has already adopted 100 learners under its psychological support and counselling group.

The Keamogetswe M Foundation is helping Grade 12 learners with peer-to-peer counselling and motivation.
The pandemic has impacted academics and disrupted the normal patterns of schooling.
Some of the learners might be finding it hard to cope with academic stress and the pressure to complete the academic year in time.

Founder of the Kwa-Thema-based NPO Keamogetswe Masike said youths’ mental health needs to be addressed.
“Since the start of the pandemic, almost everything has shifted to online. I was shocked to learn that some matric learners do not know even a single application that can be used for a virtual meeting.
“We want to bridge that gap and prepare them to be ready to use technology when they enrol at higher learning institutions,” he said.
The foundation has already adopted 100 learners under its psychological support and counselling group.
“The majority of our public schools do not offer psychological support apart from the academics. They may not be aware that the anxiety over exams may be pushing some learners over the edge.
“Many are anxious about whether they’ll pass or not. We are here to help them through it all,” said Masike.
The NPO is in talks with relevant stakeholders to join in on this new programme.
It will be having its first virtual presentation on September 4 with speakers from different higher learning institutions and Duduzane Zuma.

Masike said the virtual meeting will be focused on psychological support, responsible social media use, mental health and bullying.
“We are going to also touch on the issue of university and TVET college applications, as well as bursary applications. We want to help over 10 000 learners apply so they do not end up sitting at home doing nothing,” he said.
The virtual meetings and school visitations will take place until the Grade 12 learners sit for their final examinations.
