During his department’s budget vote in the provincial legislature, MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi said more than 1 000 teachers and close to 2 000 learners have tested positive for Covid-19.
He explained that because the country is in the middle of a third wave, this is causing immeasurable panic and misery in schools.
“We are receiving daily updates of positive cases in all our schools. Since the beginning of the year, 1 077 educators tested positive while 1 977 learners also tested positive. We have further closed 20 schools,” he explained.
Concerned resident Maria Nkoana said she is worried about the increasing numbers of learners who are testing positive for Covid-19.

“We fear for their health and our own because they will bring it home.
“It is heart-breaking that the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga has decided not to close the schools even though there is a crisis,” she said.
Nkoana added she is hoping that with the increasing numbers in school the president will influence the minister to close the schools.
“As it is, many schools are temporarily closed for a week at a time for decontamination,” she said.
