Sporting fraternity mourns loss of legend

Family spokesperson Mandla Hlatshwayo confirmed Boycie Ntlwane died of Covid-19-related complications.

Kwa-Thema – Former professional athlete Boycie Ntlwane (58) died on Sunday at the Netcare N17 Hospital.

Ntlwane was the co-founder of the Kwa-Thema Striders Athletics Club, former development manager at Athletics South Africa and Central Gauteng Athletics and joined the City of Ekurhuleni in 2009 as manager of High Performance and Academies.

Ntlwane was part of the founding members of the iconic Soweto Marathon.
Hlatshwayo described Ntlwane as a family man.
“Not only was he active in the community, but he was also always able to bring the family together,” he said.
His achievements included receiving national colours (the Springbok blazer).
The Central Gauteng Athletics said in a statement that Ntlwane will be missed.

“On behalf of the Central Gauteng Athletics management and the entire athletics family, we would like to convey our sincere condolences to the Ntlwane family and Kwa-Thema Striders Athletics Club family.
“It is with great sadness that due to Covid-19 regulations, we may be deprived of sending off this great member of our athletics family or share some of our memories together with his loved ones,” read the statement.
The Caucus of the ANC in Ekurhuleni said as a manager in the City’s department of SHRAC, Ntlwane was gentle and served with distinction, honour and humility.

“This year, it would have been four years since the office has been working closely with him in ensuring that we develop our learners at Tlakula High School, aimed at championing the improvement of academic support and social development.
“The invisible enemy, Covid-19, continues to rob us of an opportunity to live our normal lives and to make an impactful contribution to our communities to our full potential,” it said.
Ntlwane will be buried on Friday at the Vlakfontein Cemetery.
