Tips to keep you safe from hijackers

Do not stop when an unknown vehicle is flicking its lights in your direction. Rather drive and stop where it is safe.

Tsakani – The SAPS would like to make the community aware of the increase in hijackings committed in Tsakani and neighbouring areas.
Tsakani police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu said all motorist should be alert at all times when driving.
Things to be aware of:
• Do not stop when an unknown vehicle is flicking its lights in your direction. Rather drive and stop where it is safe.
• When you come across a rock or any object in the middle of the road that is obstructing you do not try to remove it, rather make a U-turn.

• Do not sit in the vehicle at night while parked outside on the pavement or the road.
• Do not offer lifts to strangers.
• Do not stop your vehicle at night for any reason, only stop where it is safe.
• Do not ask for directions from anyone on the road rather go to the nearest police station.
• The other trick used by perpetrators to get you to stop is to bump your vehicle. When you get out to check the damage, they forcefully take your vehicle.
• When someone asks for a lift, do not entertain this.
• Doors should be locked at all times.
• Windows to be closed if possible.
There is no specific time, area and modus operandi used. The types of vehicles used are different and at times the culprits are on foot.
