Local tennis players shine in tournament

The junior team had its fair share of wins in the Gauteng East Wilson Challenge Tournament in Benoni on Sunday.

Kwa-Thema – Kwa-Thema Sparks Tennis Club participated in the Growthpoint Soweto Abadala Tournament over the weekend in Soweto.

The two-day annual event endorsed by Tennis South Africa saw over 120 participants in different age categories flexing their strokes at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Court in Soweto.

The local team, made up of five senior players, put up a fight. The partnership of the Nkosi brothers, John and Fannie, resulted in a win in the finals of men’s doubles in their age category.

Team coach Moses Ngwenya said they are happy to be crowned number one in the 55-year-old category.

“The win should encourage everyone in the community to join the team,” said John Nkosi.

Lefentse Nkosi scooped seventh position in the ladies’ singles in her category, beating her Cape Town opponent 6-4 7-6 (8-6).

Ngwenya added he is happy with the performance of all the players and thrilled that tennis is growing bigger in the area despite the lack of proper and safe tennis courts.
