Pregnant mom and son die in shack fire

“When I went out to investigate I saw their shack covered in flames and spreading to ours.”

Duduza – A heavily pregnant woman and her nine-year-old son died after a shack fire in Duduza on Monday evening.
The child died in the fire while the mother succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
The woman’s husband sustained burns and was last seen after he was rescued from the shack.
Their neighbour, Sakina Langa (32), who survived the fire, explained she heard the couple speaking in raised voices in the early hours of the evening.

“I didn’t pay attention to this and a short while later I heard the husband screaming for help for someone to open their door from outside.
“When I went out to investigate I saw their shack covered in flames and spreading to ours,” she said.
Sakina added she decided to run back to her shack to rescue her two children who were already sleeping.
Her oldest son (9) ran into the burning shack to rescue his friend who was trapped inside, but the flames were too harsh.
He sustained burns to his right leg and left arm.
Sakina added they have lost everything they owned as a result of the fire and are only left with the clothes on their backs.
