Schools urged to help elect new SGB members

Parents who are not able to attend these meetings should get nomination forms from the schools.

Duduza – Stephen Tshime Pailane is urging parents to exercise their rights in electing incoming School Governing Bodies (SGB).
He is part of the National Association of School Governing Body (NASGB) committee and a provincial executive member stationed in Duduza.
According to Pailane, a circular was issued regarding the 2021 elections at schools in February.
Parents who are not able to attend these meetings should get nomination forms from the schools.

“Term of office for SGB is for three years meaning that the last elections were held back in 2018 during March and April.
“Therefore, the current SGB members in office are preparing for a handover for those to be elected.
“The process started on March 1 and will be coming to an end on April 30.
“The schools have already submitted their management plans to the districts,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of schools sharing information with parents during the process.
“Parents must be notified of the date of nominations and elections. They must make sure that all parents are on the schools’ voters roll.
“The school’s IEC must also issue correspondence to parents. On the day of elections parents need to bring the identity document,” he explained.
Schools are urged to ensure the safety of parents during the process by adhering to proper Covid-19 protocols.

“There must be a station where sanitiser is available and temperatures are taken. Social distancing must be observed and an attendance register must be kept.
“To form a quorum at least 15 per cent of the registered parents must have voted. If the school fails to form one then the meeting must be moved to another date.
“Parents should not be afraid to be part of the SGB as all incoming members are given proper training. It is important for parents to get involved in their children’s education process,” he added.
