Shining a light on the rights of those living with epilepsy

“This is a special month as March 21 is Human Rights Day and March 26 is Purple Day."

Epilepsy South Africa is preparing for the celebration of two remarkable days this month.
“This is a special month as March 21 is Human Rights Day and March 26 is Purple Day,” said Valentine Muradzikwa, PRO at Epilepsy South Africa.
“The rights of people with disabilities can be part of the focus on Human Rights Day as this encapsulates the core value of inclusivity through the incorporation of people with epilepsy into mainstream society.
“Human Rights Day focuses on equality, human dignity, freedom of movement and residence, language and culture as well as life.”
He said the community has to do away with stigmatisation and societal misconceptions about people living with epilepsy.

“Purple Day is a global grassroots event formed to increase worldwide awareness of epilepsy.
“On the day people around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness,” he said.
Muradzikwa said the United Nations noted that most persons with disabilities live in conditions of poverty, and in this regard recognises the critical need to address the negative impact of poverty on persons with disabilities.
“Article 9 of the UNCRP Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities highlights the importance of enabling persons with disabilities to live independently and allowing them to participate fully in all aspects of life,” he added.

Epilepsy South Africa offers residential care services and protective workshops as health care and employment opportunities to people with epilepsy and other disabilities.
