Top matrics recognised by Ekurhuleni mayor

Two learners from Kenneth Masekela Secondary School were among learners within Ekurhuleni who were recognised and awarded certificates for their hard work.

The Godfrey Pitje Academic Excellence Awards, previously known as the Ekurhuleni Excellence Awards, took place at the Germiston Civic Centre on March 10.

Two learners from Kenneth Masekela Secondary School, Busisiwe Mkhonta and Senamile Mtshali, were among learners within Ekurhuleni who were recognised and awarded certificates for their hard work.

Mkhonta attained six distinctions and Mtshali obtained five.

“I am grateful to see my hard work is appreciated.

“I have no words to express how I feel but one thing is for sure: I am proud of myself.

“I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life, as I will be going to the University of the Witwatersrand to study accounting science,” said Mkhonta.

Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina said they have increased the education allocation to R100-million.

“This increase has enabled us to help many young people realise their dreams of pursuing academic training in different career fields.

“With the One Business, One student campaign, we want to encourage the private sector to get involved in education by providing a fully sponsored bursary to deserving learners.

“We believe that government, the private sector and civil society must work together to develop the youth,” said Masina.

Mtshali, who will also be studying towards an accounting science degree at Wits, wished the Class of 2021 the best of luck.

“There’s nothing hard about matric, it simply requires discipline, work and determination.

“Challenges will always be there; however, the trick is to remain calm, focused and determined.

“Know who you are and what you want to achieve in life,” he explained.
