Kwa-Thema – A handful of loyal supporters gathered outside the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Thursday
morning, chanting struggle songs in support of suspended Ward 79 councillor and attempted murder accused
Zwelibanzi Ngwenya.

The dwindling number of supporters, mostly elderly people, held placards with the message ‘hands off our councillor’.
Ngwenya was arrested and charged with attempted murder following the shooting of Mxolisi Dludlu.
It is alleged the councillor’s brother was fighting with Dludlu on December 24 last year and Ngwenya was called
to intervene.
Upon arrival, Ngwenya allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the face.

Ngwenya was arrested on December 29 and released on R1 000 bail the following day.
He has pleaded not guilty.
The trial has been set for April 15, 16 and 19 next year.
Five witnesses will be called by the State and the defence will not be calling any witnesses during the trial.
A medical report containing more than 100 pages has been submitted as part of the evidence.
Regional secretary of PAC Vumani Makhanya expressed his dismay that Ngwenya was “still roaming the
streets of Kwa-Thema”.
“This is not fair to the victim because he has lost function of parts of his face, especially his eyesight.
“We are happy the trial date has been set and the matter will be tested in court,” he said.
