Residents angry over sewage

Residents are at their wits’ end regarding a broken sewage pipe in Deep Levels.

Kwa-Thema – Residents are growing increasingly frustrated about a sewage leak at Deep Levels that has been ongoing for months. According to resident Mzwakhe Seritsane, the matter has been reported to the City of Ekurhuleni without any success. “The incident occurred in May. I am not really sure what caused it, but the lid of the manhole fell inside the manhole. “From then onward waste water started to spill across the street.

“We have to deal with faeces, urine and dirty water each and every day,” he explained. He said they have notified the metro on numerous occasions without any success. “After reporting, a truck came but the workers said they could not fix it as it wasn’t the responsibility of their department. “I have gone to the municipality to lodge a complaint and they keep saying they will come, but months later we are still dealing with the same issue,” Seritsane added. The manhole is located close to his gate. He believes the matter is starting to affect his family’s health.

“I live with my three children and their mother, and the smell has become unbearable. “When it rains everything pools up there and you can see everything. When the neighbours use their toilets everything comes out there,” he said. The metro’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the query was lodged as a water burst instead of a sewage pipe burst.
