Vandalism is cause of havoc

“The energy department is aware of the matter and we are working to fix it."

Kwatsaduza – A lack of street lights along Vlakfontein Road, from the newly revamped section (Selcourt Estate), has resulted in the road becoming an accident zone.

Without proper lighting, the road is difficult to traverse at night.
Driving on the long road one can see the remaining parts of the vandalised palisade cement blocks which were once the source of the lights.

Ward 111 councillor Tshepiso Mondlane claimed nyaope users are vandalising the lights to access a substance inside which they then use to make nyaope.
“The energy department is aware of the matter and we are working to fix it.
“All the street lights from Kwa-Thema to Nigel are not functioning because of nyaope boys who want that substance.
“No normal person can vandalise something that benefits the community.
“The number of accidents has also increased due to the lack of street lights,” said Mondlane.
Residents are concerned about the number of car accidents in this area, as a result of no street lights, since the completion of the project.
“It is difficult to drive on this road, especially at night, and I have witnessed two horrific car crashes to date, one in which the driver died on the spot.

“The problem is that the T-junction has no street lights, no traffic signs or traffic lights.
“In most cases it seems drivers, who are not familiar with this road don’t stop when they reach the T-junction, resulting in head-on collisions.
“There is also confusion among motorists as there’s no traffic sign to indicate that if you turn left or right you are going to Springs or Duduza,” said resident Tshepo Masemola.
