Heritage celebrated

“We often have to dig into our own pockets to keep the lights on and we are unemployed."

Kwa-Thema – Mpumelelo Community Organisation held a fund-raising initiative on Saturday.
The funds are set to be used to help with the administrative costs of the organisation and help improve the living conditions of one of the residents.
Heritage was the theme of the event and different cultures in South Africa were celebrated.
Dressed in bright colourful attire, residents showed off their traditional dance moves.

Hold your heritage high

Secretary of the organisation Thuli Zondo said they decided to celebrate Heritage Month with the residents.
“This is to transfer knowledge and wisdom about different cultures to the young ones.
“This will ensure that they too will teach others and be proud of their heritage and where their forefathers come from,” she said.

Zondo added that through the initiative they also decided to raise funds for the organisation.
“We are a NGO and don’t receive any funding. We often have to dig into our own pockets to keep the lights on and we are unemployed.
“We are hoping the funds raised will be enough to keep us running for a few months until we receive other donations.
“We have also identified a resident whose living conditions are very bad and we would like to help.
“They don’t have an electricity connection and the shack is in a bad condition,” Zondo said.
Zondo urged residents to come forward to help where they can, especially with building material.
