Local artist to showcase his art at international festival

“I am excited to be part of this huge African art festival."

KwaThema – Visual artist Nico Phooko has been invited to participate in the Bakanal de Afrique Artist Fellowship. The BdA 2020 cohort includes creatives of diverse disciplines including filmmaking, dance, music, textile art, installation, visual art, literary and performance. The artists will journey through the 2020 theme, ‘Mi Soon Come’: how modes of transportation in urban cultures intersect with culture, class and citizenship. They will create new artistic work to be featured as part of the Virtual BdA multidisciplinary Afro Urban festival, in November 2020.

Through this opportunity, Nico gets to celebrate people through art and culture, exchange with other artists of African descent, and create new work to be featured in the Virtual BdA multidisciplinary Afro Urban festival. “I am excited to be part of this huge African art festival. “It is very good to collaborate and share creative ideas with artists from the other regions of Africa, USA and Europe and to be reminded that African art matters, even in these times of uncertainties we are all facing in the world today.” “This is an opportunity for more exposure of my ‘Notes ‘n Strokes,” he said. As part of giving back to his community, Nico coordinates and facilitates art workshops with young up-and-coming artists locally and in travels to artists’ residencies. “I believe through sharing professional encounters with international artists with young aspirant artists is a great way of breathing hope into their artistic ambitions and prowess. “I will be facilitating a dance and art workshop soon with one of Africa’s prolific and professional dancer/choreographer Moeketsi Koena at the Katlehong Arts Centre,” he said.
