Revoni launches pad drive to restore the dignity of young girls

Revoni Foundation continues to attend to the need of the community

It is easy to take things like sanitary pads for granted, but for many girls this basic need still remains a luxury.

With this in mind, and as part of Women’s Day celebrations, the Revoni Foundation hosted a fun event to collect donations of sanitary towels.

“Women should not be struggling for a simple product.

“Some girls even drop out of school due to shame and all of this is preventable,” said Itumeleng Smith of the Revoni Foundation.

With the help of Khanyisile Zindela from ‘Padded Up’ and a group of young people who dedicated their time, the foundation hosted a fun walk and aerobics session at Vergenoeg shops.

Participants had to donate a pack of sanitary towels to be part of the fun.

Research has shown that underprivileged girls can miss up to 50 days of school per year due to lack of access to adequate feminine hygiene products.

“A girl’s choice of menstrual hygiene materials is often limited by cost, availability and social norms.

“Menstruation is a barrier to education for many of our girls and restricts their opportunities for involvement in educational and sports activities,” said Smith.

The Revoni Foundation is dedicated to helping neglected children and those from underprivileged families.

The organisation works towards projects like basic education for children, healthcare, intervention and awareness
programmes to ensure that girl children know it is okay to be a woman and to have a menstrual cycle.

They also actively help in disaster rescue and relief operations in Kwa-Thema so that girl children can reach out when in need.

“Knowing how many young girls face the humiliation of missing weeks of school due to their periods as they cannot afford sanitary pads pushed us to start this drive.

“Girls are being unfairly disadvantaged and losing out on precious learning time; they are being denied a basic human right.”

The sanitary towels donated were distributed on Sunday in Marikana and Barcelona.
