Youth taking a stand against food insecurity

“We want to appeal to the community, the municipality and private businesses to help us reach our goal by the end of May.”

Keamogetswe M Foundation is doing its part in the fight against food insecurity.

Based in Kwa-Thema, the foundation seeks to serve selflessly through donations, social support, assistance and facilitation of community building programmes.

“During the lockdown, we have identified 100 families within Kwa-Thema who will be provided with food and other essentials,” explains founder Keamogetswe Masike.

He says these families are constrained and don’t have the means to survive during this period.

“We approached our municipality and a few community builders to assist.

“Fortunately, Rise Against Hunger and Green Movement called and partnered with us.

“One provided food for about 60 families from Marikana to Highland.”

Green Movement encourages the use of renewable energy and has created a product as a fire source using biodegradable materials.

They gave away 10 samples which people can use in their homes.

“In the homes that we have reached some of the living conditions are really saddening.

“One house we visited had no doors, no windows, no electricity, no bed, no stove.

“This is the shocking reality that we still live with,” he adds.

The 22-year-old says the project still needs to provide for 40 families.

The last week of May will be guided by the regulations of the lockdown.

“We want to appeal to the community, the municipality and private businesses to help us reach our goal by the end of May.”
