Not business as usual for local street vendor

“Times are hard for us small business people, especially those of us who are trading in the township."

Kwa-Thema – Informal trader David Khoza (44) says his business has taken a knock over the past couple of weeks due to the pandemic.

“Times are hard for us small business people, especially those of us who are trading in the township.

“People no longer trust our products because of fear of Covid-19.

“As much as they are afraid to leave their homes,” says Khoza.

His informal trade set up is situated at Kubeka Street, near Phulong Secondary School.

“I have been selling here for years now, the reason I chose this place is because it is closer to the school, which made things a lot easier for me because learners would pass by to buy before going to school, even after school.

“But with schools not operating that has also had a negative impact on the business,” he adds.
The street vendor works seven days a week, and starts selling from 7am to 6.30pm.

“I would like to remind the community that we are the most vulnerable at the moment, their support would go a long way as business has dropped and we are trying everything we can to survive.

“All my products are cleaned. I even clean my work station to ensure people who come to buy are safe,” explains Khoza.
