Sharp decrease in Easter weekend road fatalities

Kwatsaduza – Each year, lives are lost on the roads during the Easter weekend, as many make their ways to their holiday destinations, church conferences and family homes.

This year has been very different.

Twenty roving and static roadblocks were staged in the east, south and north of the metro.

Two thousand and one motor vehicles were stopped during the operations, where 880 traffic fines were issued for moving violations, defects and documentation (not in possession or failing to carry driver’s licence/professional driver’s permit).

Eleven motorists were arrested for driving while intoxicated and seven unroadworthy motor vehicles were discontinued from operating on the public road.

One fatal crash took place on Sunday in Alberton, where a male passenger died after their Toyota light delivery vehicle lost control on JG Strijdom Road and rolled.

A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Brackendowns Police Station to determine the cause and for further investigations.

All those arrested are expected to appear in the appropriate magistrate’s courts soon.
