Organisations join forces to curb food insecurity during lockdown

Mining Affected Communities United (MACUA) partnered with Ekurhuleni Environmental Organisation (EEO) to donate much-needed food parcels in Reedville, KwaThema and Langaville.

Khosi Nomnqa explains to Gogo Mathibeli Masemula how to use hand sanitiser in the fight against the spread of Covid-19.

“We are a movement which capacitates communities on environmental issues.

“Now during this period we are helping pensioners and the disadvantaged children, as well as disabled people, for basic necessities,” explains Meshack Mbangula, national coordinator of MACUA.

Based in Springs, the EEO’s objectives are to enable communities about environmental issues, such as Environmental Law, Environmental preservation.

“We also advocate for communities who are affected by industries that have environmental impacts on our communities.

“These may include mining companies and factories,” adds Sabelo Mnguni, secretary of MACUA Ekurhuleni Branch.

Sabelo Mngumi helps Gogo Salume Makgethe, one of the beneficiaries of the food parcel donation, to sanitise her hands.

The organisation conducts workshops, awareness campaigns and marches, where it is necessary.

Both EEO and MACUA decided to conduct the programme after the President declared a national disaster because of the Covid-19 pandemic which lead to lockdown.

“Most of this communities have senior citizens, child-headed homes who don’t have any source of income.

“We started the programme to assist those vulnerable citizens with food parcels,” says Mbangula.

The roll-out of the programme began on March 30.
