The national lockdown has brought to light how so many South African families live from hand to mouth daily.

“There is a huge demand for basic groceries during this lockdown period, so we are going out every other day to deliver food parcels,” explains Martha Ntshona, the director of Hlasempho Community Development Projects based in KwaThema.

Elderly receive food parcels from church

The organisation has delivered no less than 20 hampers each day.

The hampers consist of mealie meal, teabags or coffee, sugar and tinned food.

“The community needs to come together to support people who survive on what they can get from day to day.

“Now that we are on lockdown, those who have should help those who have nothing.”

She also runs a soup kitchen at Selope Thema Clinic.

Some of the organisation’s beneficiaries receive food parcels every month.

“We know that it is difficult for people to take medicines on an empty stomach.

“The food parcels help those who are not in good health to complete their treatment, or stay on them if they have chronic diseases.”

Ntshona says her organisation has no plans of slowing down.
