GDE Springs employees say they feel unsafe at work

Dhlamini says they have no problem with working, they just want to feel safe while they do.

This morning, staff at the Gauteng East Department of Education gathered outside the office to protest over what they say is an unsafe working environment.

Workers allege the building they are in is not safe and that nothing has been done about it.

“We don’t have any windows that open in this building.

“The ventilation system is also very poor, so we’re all breathing in the same air.

“We’ve had no proper answers from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), even though we’ve reported it,” says Bongani Dhlamini, a representative for the employees.

Additionally, workers say they feel unsafe in the building as the government has said people must avoid being in groups of 100 or more, yet there are more than 100 employees in their office.

“The GDE has also not provided us with any sanitising equipment or gloves; we must buy our own.

“There are three companies in this building, and although we can do our own checks, we are still at risk.

“We want to adhere to the regulations set by government, and show our respect to the president,” says Dhlamini.

Dhlamini says they have no problem with working, they just want to feel safe while they do.

When approached for comment, centre manager Brenda Reddy said she would respond to the allegations about the building at a later stage.

Spokesperson for GDE Steve Mabona said he was not aware of the protest and would comment at a later stage.

Workers dispersed approximately two hours after the protest started and said they would gather on Monday to protest and hand over their complaints to management.
