Family of Arianna Engelbrecht wants answers for her suffering

A third surgery was needed when the wound opened again on March 11.

In an article entitled “Hospital denies allegations”, published on February 27, the Addie was told that Arianna Engelbrecht, a patient at Far East Rand Hospital (FERH), was forced to sleep on the floor while waiting for treatment following a broken leg.

It has since been clarified by her husband, Phillipus Johannes Engelbrecht, that Arianna was taken to the hospital for surgery on her stomach wall.

According to Phillipus, Arianna was first taken to FERH on February 11 for the surgery which was a success and she was released the following day.

He says that the drain was not correctly removed before she was discharged and he and his family were required to clean the wound themselves.

Phillipus says that they were given no guidance from the nursing staff or doctors on how to properly care for the wound.

Phillipus alleges that Arianna had to be taken back to the hospital on February 19 when the bottom part of the wound, where the surgery was performed, opened and started to bleed.

He and his daughter both allege that Arianna waited several hours in the emergency room to see a doctor and was forced to sleep on the floor overnight as she could only be seen the following day.

Arianna was taken into surgery on February 21 and the wound was closed.

A third surgery was needed when the wound opened again.

Arianna was admitted on March 11 for surgery on the following day, and according to her husband she was forced to sleep in a bed with wet sheets. He says that during this operation, the wound was cleaned.

However, as of March 16, Arianna is still in the hospital and the bottom part of her wound has not been closed. Additionally, Phillipus was told by the doctor that a special vacuum is required to clean the wound, but the hospital is unable to obtain one as the hospital lacks the funds to do so.

Phillipus wants to know why his wife has been made to suffer like this for more than a month without the hospital being able to give him an explanation.

“I see her getting weaker and weaker every day and they can’t tell us what’s going on with her,” says Phillipus.

FERH communications officer Phumza Ntuthuka says that their answers to the Springs Advertiser’s questions about the patient being forced to sleep on the floor still apply.

However, she offered no comment on the questions pertaining to the wound which is not healing.
