Metro confirms talks are underway to exchange land on which KwaThema Police Station is situated

After years of going back and forth between the Department of Public Works, Ekurhuleni metro and SAPS, who were all refusing to take responsibility for the rebuilding, confirmed talks are underway to remedy the situation.

KwaThema – There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel on the call for the rebuilding of KwaThema Police Station.

This is after years of civil society and police officials called for the dilapitating police station to be rebuilt.

The offices were confirmed unsafe by the Department of Labour in 2018, with the ceiling falling off, the roof leaking, rain water damaging important documents and electrical faults.

The bathrooms are not functional and officers are forced to use those of their neighbours or go home to relieve themselves.

Some of the abandoned buildings within the station are now used by homeless people.

The police station also doesn’t have holding cells. They are using those of Springs Police Station or Tsakane Police Station.

This was confirmed in a media response from the metro.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe confirmed there are various meetings and communications with the Department of Public Works relating to the exchange of the property on which the KwaThema Police Station is situated. These engagements continue.

In another media inquiry response, Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza said the provincial office could not comment on the issue because the building that houses KwaThema SAPS belongs to the Department of Public Works.
