Young doctors motivate local learners

“Through the initiative, young doctors go to the schools to offer motivational talks and career guidance to the learners.”

Tsakane –Pholosong Hospital recently took the Doctor in my Classroom initiative to Langaville Secondary School.

The programme was launched a year ago with the aim of tackling teenage pregnancy, suicide, depression and substance abuse with young people, especially of school-going age.

Pholosong Hospital spokesperson, Thabisile Mkhwanazi, says to date the initiative has reached thousands of learners in the 14 schools in Kwatsaduza.

“It has since grown to reach other schools outside of Ekurhuleni.

“Through the initiative, young doctors go to the schools to offer motivational talks to the learners.

“We prefer younger doctors because they understand the challenges the learners face daily because they themselves were recently in the school environment.

“They caution learners about the dangers of substance abuse and their long-term side effects, teenage pregnancies and the effects of falling pregnant at that age.”

Mkhwanazi adds that through the campaign, they believe the learners will make informed decisions about their health and future.
