Tlakula Secondary to fight bullying

KwaThema – Following recent reports of bullying and abuse in schools, Tlakula Secondary School’s governing body will be meeting with parents to try and address some of the social issues affecting the learners and school.

This is in response to the alarming number of learners who took their lives to end the painful journey.

Chief whip of the ANC in Ekurhuleni Jongizizwe Dlabathi decided to call a parents’ meeting to help come up with intervention strategies to fight this scourge.

Dlabathi says two weeks ago, with other stakeholders, they visited the school as part of the back-to-school campaign.

“While planning the calendar for the year, teachers raised concerns about bullying at the school.

“We believe through this intervention we will not only uproot this ill behavior, but also improve the academic performance of the learners.

“We would also like to see a big improvement in the school’s matric results in maths, science and accounting,” he says.

Chairperson of the school governing body Mxolisi Kota says like many other schools in the country, the learners lack discipline, there is a culture of substance abuse, arriving at school late, teenage pregnancy, bullying, lack of nutritional support, and lack of sponsorship for infrastructural development purposes.

The school will be hosting a parents’ meeting at the school February 13 at 4pm.

“The meeting will assist to educate and create awareness about the important role that can be played by the parents and other community stakeholders in tackling social ills in our schools,” he adds.
