A 48 year old male was shot and killed in a hail of bullets on the of Nigel Road and Coaton Avenue in Selcort, Springs.
Sgt Harry Manaka says the man, who is a well-known taxi owner was said to be on his way home, around 9pm on Friday.
He was driving alone in his blue Toyota Hilax bakkie.
He had stopped at red traffic light when a yellow BMW with an unknown number of occupants opened fired multiple times at his vehicle killing him instantly.
Police found more 35 cartridge cases at the scene of the incident.
Though the motive of the killing is unknown at this stage, police cannot rule out that it might be taxi related.
The SAPS are appealing to anyone who may have information that can assist in arresting the alleged perpetrators to contact the Saps on 0118116600 or the Saps Crime Stop at 0800 10111.
