Tsakane – Tsakane Sports Academy awarded farmers from the Vukani Bafazi Farmers project as part of their initiative to encourage and educate people about the importance of farming.

They ran a competition from December and it is set to become an annual event.

Samson Ndlovu, founder of the Tsakane Sports Academy, says they want more people to get involved with the project.

“The response from the farmers has been amazing. We enjoy working with them as they are self-sufficient, and we would like for more people to get involved.

“We as an organisation assist them with fund-raising, farming tools and supply them with seeds.

“Through this project, we have been able to educate and motivate young people to get involved as we know there’s a high shortage of food security,” he says.

The organisation handed out 22 Christmas buckets to all the farmers, 22 five litres of yoghurt, 22 packs of 12.5kg maize meal and 22 five litres of juice.

The top four farmers were selected based on their work ethic, commitment and the variety of vegetables they had produced, and most importantly team work.

They each walked away with an additional R1 000.

Chairperson of Vukani Bafazi Farmers Linda Mjobo says they are happy to see people from their own community stepping up to assist them.

“No one has taken interest in us since 2013. It brings us joy to see that there are some people who still care and value our work.

“Our farming project truly makes a difference in our lives, as we are able to produce food for our families and make some pocket money from it.

“I would like to thank each and every one who has been part of this initiative from the beginning and I would like to encourage them to never give up,” adds Mjobo.
