Residents block roads and torch vehicles

The residents demanded to be addressed by the MEC or someone in a senior position either in the police services or government.

KwaThema – Four people were arrested for public violence during a protest in Marikana informal settlement on Thursday.

Angry residents, who are demanding RDP houses, blocked Masibene, Vlakfontein and Ndlela streets with concrete blocks and burning tyres, thus obstructing traffic.

They went on to burn a bakery truck, pushed a security vehicle into a ditch and stoned police vehicles.

The protest started on Wednesday morning to coincide with the MEC of Finance and E-Government Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko’s visit to the area.

Her visit was as part of the ‘It’s all systems go for Gauteng schools initiative’.

The residents demanded to be addressed by the MEC or someone in a senior position, either in the Gauteng provincial police services or government.

KwaThema police spokesperson Const Media Khoza says police and other law-enforcement officers were able to restore calm by Thursday afternoon.
