KwaThema’s matric results

Zimisele High School topped other KwaThema schools with a pass rate of 94.9%, which was a huge improvement on their previous 75.8%.

KwaThema – While a few schools’ performances in the 2019 matric exams dropped compared with the 2018 results, matriculants at other schools managed to do fairly well in their final exams.

Zimisele High School topped other KwaThema schools with a pass rate of 94.9%, which was a huge improvement on their previous 75.8%.

The school produced 23 distinctions, 40 bachelor’s degree passes, 23 diploma passes and 11 higher certificate passes. Their top achiever obtained five distinctions.

A total of 78 learners wrote the exams and 74 passed.

Deputy principal Eulanda Mashego says: “We are very proud of all our learners. Their hard work is evident.

“We achieved this thanks to the motivational talks we have with our learners quarterly, and the involvement of parents is having a positive impact.”

She adds that despite the massive improvement, they are still willing to put in more work.

“If there are any gaps we will work to improve those, and the support we have received from the district is proving to be valuable.”

Lefa-Ifa Secondary School educators Sipho Mohloki, Miriam Ndimande, principal Mbuyiseni Nxumalo, Mamorena Khumalo and Lindi Sondiyazi.

Lefa-Ifa Secondary School produced a pass rate of 82%, a slight drop of 3% compared with their 2018 results.

A total of 107 learners wrote their exams and 88 learners passed. The school achieved 26 bachelor’s degree passes and 10 distinctions.

School principal Mbuyiseni Nxumalo says following the decrease in performance, the school is already planning for the year 2020.

“I am happy that we have managed to keep above 80%, which is a distinction.

“I am grateful to the teachers and the learners who have worked hard and remained committed throughout the year.

“We hope to achieve better results and improve on the quality and help our learners reach tertiary level,” says Xumalo.

Class of 2019 matriculants at Phulong Secondary School are Siphesihle Shongwe, Reatile Rakepa, Tshepo Mokoena, Keletso Molamo and Dineo Selema.

Nkumbulo Secondary School obtained 53 bachelor’s degree passes, 41 diploma passes and 24 higher certificate passes.

The school’s overall performance dropped from 87% in 2018 to 85% in 2019.

“I think for now we are aiming to achieve a 90% pass rate.

“We had a few challenges, but I have no doubt we will do better this year,” says school principal Henry Nukumba.

Another school which didn’t perform as expected was Phulong Secondary School.

The school’s pass rate decreased compared with last year’s 85% and they only managed to obtain 75.5% for the class of 2019.

Out of 201 registered learners, 180 wrote, 136 passed and the school obtained five distinctions.

In addition, it achieved 54 bachelor’s degree passes, 52 diploma passes and 30 higher certificate passes.

Phulong Secondary’s principal Jabulani Nyoni says: “We anticipated the results due to behavioural challenges we faced in 2019, such as learners not showing up for classes, some coming to school drunk and so forth.

“What I would advise the class of 2020 is that a shift in attitude goes a long way and they must be prepared to work hard.”

The performance of the learners at Laban Motlahabi Comprehensive improved.

The school’s pass rate rose from 85% to 90.1%.

A total of 91 learners wrote their exams and 82 passed.

The school got 11 distinctions, 39 bachelor’s degree passes, 30 diploma passes and 13 higher certificate passes.

School principal Orlando Mpatlanyane says for them to improve their pass rate they had to implement an intervention programme.

“We are thankful that our learners co-operated with us.

“We had morning and afternoon classes and we are looking forward to the year 2020,” says Mpatlanyane.

Tlakula Secondary School achieved a pass rate of 73.2%, a decrease of 4%.

They obtained eight distinctions, 45 bachelor’s degree passes, 45 diploma passes, and 36 higher certificate passes.

Out of 168 learners who wrote their exams, 123 passed.

Principal Nonhlanha Thembekwayo says she is a bit disappointed as they were expecting a pass rate of 80% and above.

“We were not expecting anything below 80%, but we are not feeling that defeated as 70% is the average pass rate for schools.

“We will surely work hard to better our 2020 results, as we have noted areas of improvement and where there’s a lack,” says

Thembekwayo.

Andile Badula, who achieved two distinctions, in history and tourism, says he wants to study law.

“I sacrificed my love for soccer to focus on my studies because I want to study law.

“I am very grateful to my teachers and my mom for supporting me in my studies,” he says.
