Kwatsaduza – As we will be enjoying the festive season, many residents will be adding fireworks to the celebrations.
Many, however, do not know it is illegal to sell and set off fireworks without the necessary permission from the metro.
In a statement released by the metro, Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said businesses have to apply at the SAPS’s Explosives Unit for a licence to sell fireworks.

“This is to help the metro’s emergency services and EMPD.
“Businesses selling fireworks without a certificate of registration will receive a spot fine, with an additional fine for any other fire safety violations found.
“Residents who are interested in setting off fireworks must submit an application to the EMPD for permission.
“People using fireworks without approval can also receive a spot fine.
“This is to ensure that fireworks are used in a safe manner and will not constitute a fire hazard.”

Radebe adds that businesses are warned against illegally advertising fireworks on traffic signs and pavements, including deploying people at intersections and pavements to illegally sell these fireworks.
