Shack reduced to ashes in Mkhanqwa

No one was injured during the incident.

Kwatsaduza – The Khotle family have been left homeless after their shack was reduced to ashes on Saturday afternoon in Mkhanqwa informal settlement.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

No one was injured during the incident.

Agnes Khotle (53) says she was shocked when she received a call informing her that her shack was on fire.

“I don’t know what might have caused the fire because no one was at home when the fire started.

“We don’t know where to start with rebuilding our lives because we lost everything in that fire, but I am grateful that no one was injured.

“We are currently squatting with neighbours and appreciate all the help we have received thus far,” she explains.

Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane says they are seeking donations in the form of building material to help rebuild the shack.

“The corrugated iron that survived the blaze is badly damaged and cannot be re-used.

“We have to date received assistance from the community in the form of clothes, mattresses, bed and food parcels, but because the family is homeless they don’t have storage.

“We are pleading with anyone, especially local business people who can donate building material, to come forward,” he says.

Local church movement KwaThema Ministers Fraternal (KTMF) says they decided to lend a helping hand to the family when they heard about the incident.

“Because the organisation is invested in improving the lives of our people and fighting social ills, we thought it would help to get involved.

“We have donated the immediate basic needs of the family, which include clothes and food parcels.

“We are also raising funds to buy stationery for the learner who is still in school,” he adds.
