Residents urged to use water sparingly

Kwatsaduza- Residents are urged to use water sparingly as temperatures rise, which results in high water consumption levels and strain on the water supply network.

The South African Weather Service has recorded high temperatures in Ekurhuleni this week.

In a statement released by the office of the MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy Clr Tiisetso Nketle urged residents to use water to stay hydrated, yet sparingly.

“Residents should avoid direct sunlight and congested places where air ventilation is minimal to avoid heatstroke.

“To ensure water is used wisely during these high temperature conditions, residents should refrain from watering gardens and filling swimming pools during the day and not use hosepipes when washing their cars,” she said.

Residents have been urged to follow the following water-saving tips to reduce consumption and help preserve the available water resources:

• Turn the tap off between washing your face, brushing your teeth or shaving.

• Taking a five-minute shower a day, instead of a bath, will use a third of the water used when bathing in a bathtub. If you prefer to bath, do not fill the bathtub.

• Use low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilet mechanisms and water-efficient washing machines.

• Fix leaking toilets. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily by disposing tissues, insects and other waste in the trash rather than the toilet.

• Do not excessively backwash your swimming pool.

• Use a bucket rather than a hosepipe to wash your car and water the garden.
