Learn to speak out against gender-based violence

“We are encouraging learners to report any incidences of violence perpetrated against them to the police without any fear."

Duduza – Learners from NN Ndebele Secondary School pledged their support in the fight against gender-based violence on Monday.

They took to Nala Street, just in front of the Duduza Police Station, their grievances, performed a guard of honour and chanted ‘enough is enough’ songs.

Some of the male teachers and learners showed their solidarity, by wearing high heels, head scarves and lipstick.

Learners from NN Ndebele Secondary School encouraged the community and peers to unite against gender-based violence.

Last week, the school collaborated with the Duduza police to pledge support to all victims of violence in schools around the country.

Duduza police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka educated the learners about gender-based violence.

Speaking at the assembly, he reiterated the police’s support in the fight against violence by prioritising all cases of violence against women and children.

Learners from NN Ndebele Secondary School took to the streets to speak out against gender-based violence.

“We are encouraging learners to report any incidences of violence perpetrated against them to the police without any fear.

“We cannot continue living in a society where women and children are living in fear in their homes, schools and the streets.

“As the police, we are saying we are here and will do whatever it takes to remove the abusers from our streets,” he adds.

Learners from NN Ndebele Secondary School took to the streets to speak out against gender-based violence.

School principal Billy Mashiyane says they decided to voice their support against gender-based violence because the school doesn’t operate as an island.

“These learners come from the very same community that abuses women and children and are exposed to violence.

“We see victims of violence and sometimes even witness the violence, but remain quiet until the victim is killed.

Teachers and learners joined the national outcry against gender-based violence.

“We are encouraging the learners to speak out and seek help because in the absence of their parents we are their parents.

“We are also encouraging them to report teachers who attempt to violate them sexually, even through corporal punishment,” he says.
