Illegal miner dies after shooting in Grootvlei

The group of 10 came from the top of the mine dump and started shooting at them and the victim and his brother ran towards the Grootvlei Hostel.

Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says a 38-year-old man died after a shooting at the Grootvlei old mining site last Thursday evening.

According to the victim’s brother, the two of them were busy with illegal mining at the bottom of the mine dump at the Grootvlei old mining site when they were ambushed by a group of other illegal miners.

The group of 10 came from the top of the mine dump and started shooting at them and the victim and his brother ran towards the Grootvlei Hostel.

The victim was wounded and fell down in front of room one at the hostel.

The brother and other illegal miners ran past the hostel and hid in the field.

At approximately 6am the next morning they went to the hostel, where they found the victim dead with one bullet hole in the right-side of his chest.

The deceased was a Lesotho national.
