Learners at Shadrack Primary showered with books, school shoes and love

Ethos Private Equity and Ethandweni Pharmacy employees visited the learners of Shadrack Primary School on July 18, as part of their Mandela Day outreach programme.

Tsakane – Ethos Private Equity and Ethandweni Pharmacy employees visited the learners of Shadrack Primary School on July 18, as part of their Mandela Day outreach programme.

The school received new reading material to the value of R5 000, donated by Ethos Private Equity.

Ethos Private Equity associate Nomthetho Mothejoa says the books are to empower the learners and encourage a reading culture among young people.

“Nelson Mandela said the best way to improve the lives of children is through education.

“Therefore, we decided to do something that will make a difference in the lives of children this Mandela Day.

“As they say, charity begins at home; I grew up in Tsakane and my parents still live here, which makes this day extra special for me,” says Mothejoa.

Ethandweni Pharmacy donated 30 pairs of school shoes to needy learners.

Tebogo Moloisane from the pharmacy says: “We are going to come here every year to celebrate 67 minutes with the learners, spending time with them and showing them love as Nelson Mandela showed us love.”

The learners were also educated about the history and origins of Mandela Day.

Boitshepo Radebe (12), a Grade Seven learner, says: “It makes me happy to see that there are people who still care, and I would like to thank everyone who donated and those who came to spend time with us.

“I am very excited about the books and happy for those who got new shoes.”

The school also donated food and clothes to Brian Maemula (5) and his brother, Dumiso (6), whose shack caught fire due to an electric wire fault on July 14.

Their mother, Brenda, says they have no place to sleep and that they are seeking shelter from friends and neighbours, and that the clothes were going to make a huge difference as they have nothing.

Buhle Masuku (11) says: “I am proud of my school and fellow learners for their efforts and lending a helping hand to the Masemula family.

“I donated my old school uniform as a means of helping.”
