Duduza – The Duduza Dutch Reformed Church hosted a special service on July 20 to celebrate Mandela Day by sharing food parcels with their members and those from other churches.

The initiative was inspired by their pastor, Morake Khoali, who always encourages his congregation to help not only each other, but the community as a whole.

In line with that, the church invited other churches in Duduza to identify people in their congregations who needed the packages.

“We were joined by the Methodist Church, Zulu Congregation in Africa Church, Presbyterian Church, Christian Catholic Church in Zion and the African Methodist Episcopal Church, who all brought the members they identified,” says church council member Themba Mathe.

Mathe says initiatives of this kind are important and speak to the giving spirit of Madiba.

“We want to give and help people like Madiba did,” he explains.

Mathe says the church hopes to continue helping other families.

“The number of people we could help was limited by the number of parcels we were sponsored with, but we hope to get more help from local businesses to continue the good work of helping our community,” he concludes.
