KwaThema – Learners at the Laban Motlhabi Comprehensive School celebrated Mandela Day through learning and receiving motivational and inspirational words from industry giants.

The learners were visited by the McCain family from Springs, Idols SA judge and musician Unathi Nkayi and chef Tebatso ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.

McCain’s human resources director, Karabo Mothibi, encouraged the Grade Nine learners to select their subjects for Grade 10 wisely, and emphasised the importance of working hard to achieve their dreams and goals.

“Grade Nine is the most important year for any learner as it determines what they will do for the rest of their lives,” says Mothibi.

Owner of Green Terrace, an agriculture company which was established in 2016 and has since grown to farming on 14 hectares, Mbali Nwoko says people shouldn’t undermine the power of farming.

“I want the learners to know that one can become a successful farmer and provide jobs to other people because we grow up in a community that tells us to be successful, that you need to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer.

“We need to break these stereotypes and allow the learners to pursue their heart’s desires.

“I would advise them to do as much research and learn as much as they can,” says Nwoko.

Nkayi shared her life journey and encouraged the learners to not allow their current circumstances to stand between them and their dreams, and that they should always dream big to fulfil their purpose.

Learners were also treated to a meal on the day.
