Old park in KwaThema is being reconstructed

“It was a community request for it to be revamped, and for this open space to be closed as it posed safety risks and children had no playing area. We are almost done and I can guarantee you that it is going to be beautiful, well decorated and have new equipment,” says Simelane.

KwaThema – The old Matshila Park is currently being rebuilt.

Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane says this is a response to complaints lodged by community members for the park to be revamped.

“It was a community request for it to be revamped, and for this open space to be closed as it posed safety risks and children had no playing area.

“We are almost done and I can guarantee you that it is going to be beautiful, well decorated and have new equipment,” says Simelane.

The project started at the beginning of May this year.

Site manager Robert Ngoasheng says: “This park is going to be different from the normal ones people are used to.

“We have gym equipment for both young and older people who want to stay active, play equipment for the little ones, a sport facility and an entertainment area for those who want to chill out.”

Esther Pendu, community liaison officer, says the feedback from the community so far has been very positive.

“I have been receiving very positive feedback from the community; they understand the importance and role of having this park within our community.

“It will provide health benefits to the masses and during school holidays parents will be at ease knowing their children have a proper playing area,” says Pendu.

The councillor says the project has benefited 24 unemployed people with employment and urged community members to take good care of the park.
