Learn how to powerlift at KwaThema Square

“Powerlifting is not recognised as a sport in our community as people only play soccer and take part in athletics. This roadshow will open people up to different things, something new.”

KwaThema – Bafana Nation Powerlifting will be hosting a powerlifting roadshow at KwaThema Square this Saturday.

The purpose of the event is to introduce the sport to KwaThema residents.

Founder of Bafana Nation and owner of Green Apple Gym Bafana Manake says this is because soccer and athletics seem to be the only popular sports in KwaThema.

“Powerlifting is not recognised as a sport in our community as people only play soccer and take part in athletics.

“This roadshow will open people up to different things, something new,” he says.

The show, which promises to be fun and engaging, will have powerlifters demonstrating how to powerlift and will push and pull a car.

Powerlifter Rachael Kgapola encourages everyone to come, saying that not only is the sport fun, but it opens people up to more career choices.

“Our strengths are not the same and while others are academics and can study, there are others who make sport a career.

“Opening yourself up to powerlifting could be opening yourself up to your future career,” she says.

Manake adds that a benefit of being part of the sport is that it keeps one busy and away from substances.

The roadshow is open to people between the ages of 10 and 75 and will run from 11am to 4pm.

According to the South African Powerlifting Federation, powerlifters are unique athletes competing in an exciting sport. They move massive amounts of weight in hi-tech supportive gear that protects against injury.

At the roadshow, the best-performing 10 people in each age category will be selected to participate at the next roadshow, which will be in White City on July 13, and the tournament at the KwaThema Hall on August 23.
