Mentally ill patient allegedly starts fire in ward

Emergency medical services will be diverting patients to nearby facilities until further notice.

Patients and staff escaped unharmed after a fire at the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) female ward on the second floor yesterday evening.

The fire, which was allegedly caused by a mental health patient, was put out by local firefighters and was contained only to that ward.

Patients have been moved to areas of the hospital not affected by the fire.

Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Bandile Masuku, with the department’s senior management, were at the hospital this morning to assess the situation and devise a plan to ensure minimal disruption of the hospital’s service.

“We have learnt with shock and dismay that another fire has taken place in one of our hospitals.

“That said, however, one is grateful for the fact that there were no injuries or casualties and all can be accounted for.

“I wish to thank all staff members who have acted with bravery and determination in assisting with the evacuation.

“At this stage we call upon the Far East Rand community to use nearby facilities to ensure we don’t burden the facility,” says MEC Masuku.

Emergency medical services will be diverting patients to nearby facilities until further notice.
