Games keep learners active during holidays

“Criminals target young people who are found roaming the streets without the presence of an adult."

KwaThema – Learners are kept busy this winter school holidays through games hosted by Killer Spot in KwaThema.

The initiative was started in 2017 after the organisers identified the need in their community.

Founder Themba Mguni says they were concerned about the number of young people being kidnapped, raped and terrorised in the community, especially during school holidays.

“Criminals target young people who are found roaming the streets without the presence of an adult.

“They also have them experiment with drugs and alcohol and committing crime because of peer pressure.

“The participants take part in different games, which include solving numbers, building words, learning how to drive through a game and PlayStations.

“We identified that through the games they are kept occupied and by the time they are done, it would be time to go home,” he says.

Themba says as part of the initiative they also have motivational speakers who encourage young people to be in school and stay away from illegal activities.
