Covenant Helpers feed Marikana

“We buy the food from our own pockets and as such can only cover one day a week. As time goes on, we would like to cover more days because we worry about what they eat on the other six days that we don't cover.”

KwaThema – The Covenant Helpers from KwaThema started a weekly soup kitchen on May 1 that helps the people of Marikana informal settlement in KwaThema.

The soup kitchen was started by the group as a way to help other people as part of their faith.

“As Christians, we feel that God is using us to give to other people,” says Qhamukile Mulabisani, one of the soup kitchen facilitators.

According to Nobantu Mgcina, another facilitator, the area of Marikana was selected because it is close to them and they see how unemployment is affecting the people in the area.

“Many of the parents are unemployed, and the children are likely go to bed hungry and we wanted to do something about that,” she says.

The soup kitchen has been well received as there is a long queue of children and their parents waiting to get food even before the group arrives.

The soup kitchen happens on Wednesdays but they would like to grow and cover more days.

“We buy the food from our own pockets and as such can only cover one day a week.

“As time goes on, we would like to cover more days because we worry about what they eat on the other six days that we don’t cover,” says Mulabisani.

The group is looking for donations of any kind to make their wish to serve food more often a reality.

“We are accepting donations of any kind, it can be money but it does not necessarily just have to be money.

“It can be a can of beans from your cupboard, or even your time to come and help us cook or dish up,” says Mgcina.

To donate to the group contact Mulabisani on 082 725 7276.
