Police call for the protection of children in KwaThema

“These are our children. We need to do everything in our power to ensure they are protected and feel safe at all times,” she says.

KwaThema – Learners from different schools in KwaThema attended the launch event of Child Protection Week (CPW) at KwaThema Skills Centre on Tuesday.

The CPW campaign was created by the government in 1997 to ensure that children are cared for and protected.

It is held across the country every year from May 27 to June 2 in order to mobilise society and raise awareness of the rights of children.

During the event, learners sat in groups and shared ideas on what they need to feel safe and what sort of protection they need from the community and police.

Col Mareketle Thobejane of the KwaThema Police urged the children to share the challenges they face daily.

“Our children are vulnerable to abuse and kidnapping.

“We are concerned about the growing number of cases we receive daily relating to child abuse.

“This event will help us understand how to better protect children both at home and at school,” she says.

She urged residents to play an active role in protecting children and creating a safe and secure environment for them.

“These are our children. We need to do everything in our power to ensure they are protected and feel safe at all times,” she says.

Thobejane also encouraged the learners to report members of the police who take the law into the own hands or break the law in any way.

“Police are also human, but being members of the police doesn’t give them permission to break the law,” she says.
