Talent vs Talent competition pits Ekurhuleni East schools against each other

Other than prizes, which include laptops and tablets, the young people will be exposed to SABC actors and record label Kalawa Jazzmee members who could potentially spot the talented youth.

Tsakane – The Organising Panel of Intellectuals (OPI) will be hosting a Talent vs Talent competition at Faranani Multi-Purpose Centre in Tsakane from April 29 to May 1.

The competition will be between 71 schools and four Ekurhuleni East TVET College.

The categories will be maths, science, accounting, spelling, poetry, drama, keyboard, comedy, singing, debating and choir.

Stanley Mongwe, one of the organisers, says: “We will have three stages at three different venues within Faranani where the performances will run concurrently.”

“Different judges will be scoring the performers and on the second day we will have the semi-finals.

“On the last day, the finals,” adds Jackie Teffo of OPI.

“We have also planned to have career guidance and life skills talks by motivational speakers and various representatives from government departments,” continues Zinhle Faco, who is also one of the five organisers.

The event is not Mongwe’s first of its kind as he has organised such events in other provinces.

“When I moved to Ekurhuleni I saw a lot of potential in its young people and thought to do something to bring it out,” he explains.

According to the group, the schools are very excited to be included in the programme and the community is very supportive.

“Members of the community are so excited that Ward 85 Clr Moses Sibiya is letting us use Faranani for free,” says Teffo.

Other than prizes, which include laptops and tablets, the young people will be exposed to SABC actors and record label Kalawa Jazzmee members who could potentially spot the talented youth.

The group hopes to host other events of this nature and say it is important for them to include their members, Mpho Mulovhedzi, who is still in high school, and Treasure Duncan, who is a student at the Ekurhuleni East TVET College, in the planning to show other learners that you can make a difference in the lives of others while improving your own.

While refreshments will be sold, OPI is asking for donations that will assist them in catering for the expected 6 000 attendees for the first two days as their resources only allow them to cater for judges and finalists.

“We would appreciate support from our community because this is not only for the learners, but will also benefit local unemployed youth as we have hired them to be invigilators over the three days,” Teffo concludes.
