Prayer organisation fights against abuse

The Springs Circuit Methodist Young Women Prayer Organisation hosted a no violence against women and children event on Thursday, Human Rights Day.

KwaThema – The Springs Circuit Methodist Young Women Prayer Organisation hosted a no violence against women and children event on Thursday, Human Rights Day.

This was part of the international call for the congregants to dress in black as a sign of the fight against the national scourge.

Event organiser Xolile Gubuza says they decided to demonstrate practically since the Thursday fell on a national holiday.

The event was divided into two sections, beginning with the attendees walking with messages of encouragement to fight abuse.

The second phase saw motivational speakers and victims sharing their stories.

“We are saying enough is enough with the abuse and killing of women and children in the area and country.

“We can no longer turn a blind eye when things get out of hand and women are killed daily.

“We are calling on all residents to stand up and fight against this gruesome culture,” she explains.

Abuse survivor Ayanda Ndlela shared her story of abuse and encouraged the victims to report it to the police.

“The only way to curb abuse is to report the perpetrators to the police and leave before you are killed.

“It is your life and you need to love yourself enough to fight for your survival,” she says.

Ayanda also encouraged women to empower themselves with skills.

“Many women stay in abusive relationships because they depend on their abusers for financial support.

“This will help you to not be dependant on the perpetrator and be able to survive even when they are no longer around.

“Many women stay in abusive relationships because they are unemployed and won’t be able to survive without the perpetrators in their lives,” she says.
