Uniting Hairdressers and Beauticians Association of Africa opens up the industry

“I realised that there were many people who did not have the qualifications that were doing hair and I thought it would be best to start the association to better equip them with the knowledge of different types of hair, damaged scalps and how the chemicals they use in their work react, so as to prevent injury to the clients.” - Nkosi

KwaThema – The Uniting Hairdressers and Beauticians Association of Africa handed out certificates of qualification to five Kwatsaduza hairdressers.

Founder of the association Thandi Nkosi says this is a great opportunity for the hairdressers who can now mentor other hairdressers.

“We took people who were already working as hairdressers, but were not formally qualified. We took them through our training process before they attended an interview, wrote a theory test, did their practicals and their final exam at the Idlela Trade Centre,” she explains.

According to Nkosi, the now formally qualified hairdressers can have their hair salons accredited.

Nkosi, who teaches hairdressing at the KwaThema Skills Centre, says this will open opportunities for the upcoming hairdressers she teaches at the centre.

“Now that there are five newly accredited salons, I know that I can send my students from the centre to be mentored by them, opening up the industry to more people,” she says

The association was started after Nkosi, who qualified as a hairdresser in 1995, was worried about the future of her profession.

“I realised that there were many people who did not have qualifications who were doing hair and I thought it would be best to start the association to better equip them with the knowledge of different types of hair, damaged scalps and how the chemicals they use in their work react, so as to prevent injury to the clients.”

The association will meet at 2186 Cornwell Street, Langaville Extension One, on March 18, to inform any prospective students about the training course.
