KwaThema on its way to reclaiming its status as the boxing mecca

“KwaThema was a boxing mecca, producing legends such as Simon “Tsipa” Skhosana and Silence Mabuza. We want to bring that back,” says Xaka.

KwaThema – Sandile Xaka of Supreme Boxing says he is excited to be bringing boxing back to KwaThema. “Feast in the East” is a boxing event which will be held at the KwaThema Hall on March 10 at 2pm.

The event will see middleweight boxers Walter Dlamini and Fernando Rodrigues going up for the South African middleweight title.

Thompson Mokwana is going up against Michael Mokoena in a lightweight bout.

Xaka says he hopes the event will reignite boxing in KwaThema.

“KwaThema was a boxing mecca, producing legends such as Simon “Tsipa” Skhosana and Silence Mabuza.

“We want to bring that back,” he explains.

The boxing promoter says while doing research for the event, he realised there are small boxing gyms in the area and hopes it encourages them to do more in the sports and hopefully host big fights.

Xaka says: “Tickets to events of this kind normally go for around R80 but we looked at the economic challenges in the community and decided that R20 would be a fair amount to charge.”
