Child welfare suffocated by finances

The centre is calling on local business people to come forward to help them with sponsorship and donations.

KwaThema – Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society need the help of the community to keep afloat.

The 105-year-old centre is said to be struggling to keep up with the day-to-day financial needs of the centre.

Programme manager Sanet van Moerkerken says the centre receives funding from the government but it is not enough to keep them running.

“We are grateful for the funding we receive from government, but with the forever increasing prices of everything, we are struggling to keep up.

“Through the funding we receive, we have to pay the five social workers who each has to deal with over 200 cases.

“This is more than the maximum of 80 cases they should be dealing with as stipulated by the Department of Social Development.

“We have three auxiliary nurses and the manager and still have to maintain the three vehicles, pay rent and still be able to conduct or visits.

“We have three cars which are slowly falling apart because we cannot afford to maintain them as it is expected,” she explains.

The centre is calling on local business people to come forward to help them with sponsorship and donations.

“We will appreciate all the help that we can get. We have a team that is set to raise funds but because of other commitments, they are unable to host events.
